“Hopeful thought for today: the regime has secured a short term victory at a terrible price, by shattering the illusions of free speech, fair process, and political impartiality that sustain liberalism.
Many institutions that used to carefully shroud their true views, at least for form’s sake, are now openly cheering the regime. The temptation of victory proved too great, and the result has been the self-undermining of the regime’s legitimacy. In the long term that is more important than anything that happens in the next few years.”
